the background wasn't really the issue here, the issue was the bright colors against the stragiht black background

Black is the absense of color. If you put a bright saturated color right next to it it's going to be an eyesore.

Discord dark theme looks good because it uses warm grays so the bright colors don't pop as much. It's why discord light theme is awful from a design-standpoint

That's exactly what's wrong with it though? It's an eyesore. If you use darker colors you need to use more muted ones to make it not make my eyes bleed whenever I look at the site.

I maimly went with a darker theme because it made the colors "pop" more
